Evaluation Question 5 (How did you attract your audience?)

All horror films need to keep the suspense high and climaxes to a minimal. The longer something builds in suspense the more engaged the audience becomes with the plotline and an engaged audience is an entertained audience!
My two minute opening consists of the audience questioning whether the main actress will survive or not and whether this alludes to more deaths throughout the film. Keeping the film a mystery from beginning to end seems like an impossible task when there’s so many hurdles to trip up on and reveal any twists. Each inch of the plot must be calculated and scripted so well that the finale isn’t given away at any point. Small details should be revealed every so often throughout the film to allude to the ending but never give away it’s true form – and its for this reason that I’m thankful I was only doing the opening!
I used a shot of a dripping red fairy liquid to connote death through the colour and consistency of blood – represented in the fairy liquid. The slow drip of it adds goriness without the fakeness and alludes to the characters questionable death once again.
Music within any genre of film is important. Firstly it should fit the pace of the film, ie an action film would have a fast paced, loud soundtrack.. whereas a rom-com would have some kind of cheesy lovesong as well as an upbeat love song. Horror films however are alot more versatile in their music options – most like due to the amount of sub-genres horror has! A slow dramatic soundtrack could be used, such as the iconic soundtrack of Jaws which echoes the sharks slow yet calculated movements or a faster tempo’s soundtrack for murder scenes/fight scenes etc etc.
The music I chose fits conventions of horror films in some ways but opposes them in others. Its up beat tempo and fast melody generally dont belong in horror films, but the low drone and questionable crescendo’s throughout increase pace and add a sense of risque to the final piece, all building up to the conclusion that the character does indeed die.
Using realistic characters also attracted the audience as it gave them something to relate to. The clothes and make-up is used on the girl to signify that she is normal, just like the audience.

Evalation Question 2 (How does your media product represent particular social groups?)

The social group i have represented is the teenage social group and it was quite easy as most horror movies do this because the target audience is normally young adults.
I have represented this social group by including a teenage girl character who shows independence and initiative (at times). However, we also tried to make the girl a bit thick (by opening the door and touching the balloon) t try and relate this character to someone the audience may know or even be themselves. The clothes she wears are stereotypical and they show you that there is nothing out of the ordinary as it was typical clothes, specific to the teenage social group.
There isn't really another way where we represented a certain social group because of the lack of characters in the opening sequence. Unless you class clowns as a social group, in which case we represented and presented them as being scary and not fun at all which isn't necessarily the vibe they particularly would want as an occupation but oh well. They're scary and everyone knows it.

Evaluation Question 3 (What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?)

StudioCanal UK (formerly Optimum Releasing/Home Entertainment/Classics) is a film distributor company working in the UK and Ireland. Due to them distributing films such as Tyrannosaur and Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, they would be the best bet for being a distributor for my film as they are probably one of the man distributors of independent British films.

 

The Luxe is an independent cinema in Cambridgeshire. They have regular screenings of independent films and this could provide me with the opportunity to screen my film.

The British film council is a charitable organisation established to help develop the british film industry and to invest n films. It runs the annual London Film Festival along with the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and the youth-orientated Future Film Festival. Due to their support of small independent film this could provide some opportunity for screening my film to help get it out there.

 

This is an example of a British film company that wouldn't be interested in my film and they tend to focus on "mid-Atlantic" Rom-coms that appeal to wider audiences in America to make more money.

 

Film 4 is probably the best known British independent film company. It owned and operated by Channel Four Television Corporation and has a history of distributing british films. They also screen independent british films on their tv channel.

This is another institution which specialises in independent films. It wouldn't be interested in my film as the british film industry isn't great and they would rather focus on films made in America.

 

Warp X is a sister company of Warp and specialises in social-realist films with small budgets and work with new and upcoming film talent. This company is a production company and not a distributor but it may still provide a possibility for my film.

 

 

Warp Films is an independent film company based in the UK. My film would have appeal to them or one of their sister companies and could provide the best chance of being a distributor of my film.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

We have looked largely into this question throughout the course as it is a major factor that effected the creation of the product. Obviously as a movie opening title it's for people that have the luxury of a television or cinema access (obviously). Building on that though, we can gather gender, class, age, and taste.

 

AGE

 

As we have put our age rating as 15+ which means that the target audience is no one less than 15 years old. This means that the target audience age is older teenagers and young adults that are satisfied and aroused by the horror genre. Personally, this would be a perfect film for me as i am 17 and enjoy horror films and watching them with my friends. I personally think that it wouldnt be a movie someone would watch on their own, and instead with a group of peers or maybe something you may watch with a partner. A teenage couple would be perfect for this film as it would cause the two partners to comfort each other.

 

 

Gender

 

The target gender for this product isnt really specific as it's meant for both, however if i was to hazard a guess to who may be more likely to buy this product, it would probaby be male gender as the film would contain gore and graphic aspects that may be more appealling to the male population. However this would only be because of the gore, as girls might find it too disturbing but boys may want to watch it with their friends. I know i would.

 

 

Class

 



 

I would personally suggest that this product is focused on the C/D/E social class and it would attract occupations such as builders, shop workers etc. This would be because of the connotations associated with these class types. The 'lower-class' may be more attracted to this type of film because they may watch it with their friends in the evening after work and it's often suggested that 'upper-class' may find the product to have a lack of intellectual design.

How to make a horror movie vid

This is an interesting video that shows you what you need to make a horror movie realistic and as entertaining as possible.

Health and Safety

Health and Safety in the filming area is pretty basic as we arent doing anything too risky or dangerous, however, we are using certain props that can cause some harm. We have to basically overcome this by handling them with care. The main concern would be the knife for obvious reasons. Kayleigh and I will have to handle this with care and make sure we don't hurt each other with it. Thats about it as far as health and safety goes in our little task.

Prop List

Props we will use in our Main Task Opening Title are going to have be horror orientated obviously because the  Mise en Scene have to be related to our specific genre. This will include weapons, character props, and other items that will give off a horror atmosphere. These will include knives, balloons and fairy liquid. I will now explain why we will use each prop.

We will be using fairy liquid to represent blood when washing the knife in the scene of the girl washing up. We are using red fairy liquid because it looks and mimics blood and will almost fool the audience into think it is blood however it is just a household item. We figured that this is a good way to signify danger to the woman before the clown even arrives.

We are also going to use a knife, for obvious reasons. This is a common weapon however can also be found in a household so this again signifies danger before the clown arrives but will also be used by the clown. It will also be held by the woman as a kind of metaphor for the fact that she and clown both hold the weapon she is killed by

A balloon may  not be a household item but it is still something that isnt really connoted with danger. This is why we have chosen to use a red balloon to show the danger. We are trying to show that even the less scary items can show horror aspects and scare an audience. When the audience see the balloon it will signify the arrival of the clown and cause tension. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Our Production Company

This is the logo of the production company we have created. The logo has red and black to show danger and inpurity . We think that this gives a good first impression for the opening scene of our opening title sequence. The red and black will also go nicely with the theme of the clown.
The name sadistic studios is basically just to emphasise the demonic theme of horror and to just give a good first impression for our horror movie so the audience know what they're getting.
